Day Two in the Land of OZ

Daughter drove Ski Boy to Wichita this morning for his early flight to Seattle (back to civilization). He will spend the rest of the week working there before he heads back to Anchorage. She then came back to Winfield and worked via cell phone and computer until late this afternoon.

I drove to Howard to look at the house where my grandmother Thompson lived and the Victorian house that my dining table came from 40 years ago. The Victorian house was gone but the other house was there but in somewhat disrepair. These small towns are becoming smaller and smaller.

I drove back to Grenola to pick up my cousin, Helen, and take her to lunch. We went to Moline to eat at the Crooked Creek Lodge & Swinging Bridge Café. There really is a swinging bridge not too far from the café! And hunting is becoming a new industry in this part of Kansas. I had a great old time visit with Helen.

On the way out of Moline I saw the remains of the gas station where my dad used to stop to fill up with gas. I can remember watching him as he hand pumped the gasoline to the top of the gas pump, put the nozzle into the gas tank, and filled it up.

After depositing Helen back at her home in Grenola, I headed to town with a side trip to Dexter for a stop at Henry’s Candy Factory. My shopping list consisted of lemon drops and peanut clusters. However, I walked out the door with cashew clusters, coconut clusters, black walnut clusters, peanut brittle, strawberry drops, two bags of lemon drops and one bag of peanut clusters.

I headed back to Winfield to pick up Daughter for supper. We drove about 10 miles east of town to eat here: This pic is also evidence of another successful geo cache find by Daughter:

These are some of their offerings. Please note the prices!

I had a great filet wrapped in bacon and a piece of peach pie that was out of this world. The pie crust was incredibly flaky (obviously made with lard) and the peaches were fresh and looked like actual peaches. And the taste—one can only dream about it.

Thus ended another day in Kansas.
